When writing a letter:
- Identify yourself as a constituent by including your home address.
- Be brief—one page should work.
- Try to be specific—if you can, refer to a bill by name and/or number, the legislator who introduced it, and what the bill proposes to do.
- Explain your position on the issue/bill. If appropriate, try to relate how this issue/bill affects your community.
- Ask for specific action. For example, ask your legislator to co-sponsor the bill or work actively against the bill. Also, ask the legislator to respond to your letter and let you know his/her position on the bill.
When making a phone call to your legislator:
- Again, be brief. You will probably only have a few minutes to talk.
- It is helpful to have the bill number or name if you are going to call.
- Quickly explain your position on the issue/bill.
- If you are leaving a message, please speak slowly so whomever is taking the message has enough time to write down your information.
- Sample Phone Call:
"Hello. My name is Sue Smith. My address is 1506 North Prospect St., Milwaukee, 53202. Please let Senator X know I support Senate Bill 353 because it will help food pantries in my neighborhood feed hungry people."
