Advocating for the Hungry ![]() Giving out food to the hungry is necessary, but we believe that advocacy is the way to end hunger in the long term. For us, advocacy means taking action to prevent future hunger. Taking action might mean speaking up for the 40,000 people a month using emergency food pantries in Milwaukee. It might mean challenging cuts to government nutrition programs that feed the poor. Or, it might mean partnering with local government entities to improve programs serving the poor. We pride ourselves on using innovative practices to get resources to the hungry. HOW WE ADVOCATE Hunger Task Force has a four-step process to affect change on hunger issues: Research We identify, conduct and disseminate research on state and federal nutrition programs to inform agency work. We are strong advocates for government nutrition programs including FoodShare (food stamps), WIC, school meals and summer feeding programs. Education We inform the public about hunger and poverty through presentations, workshops, hunger simulations and tours. Organizing We organize citizens for collective action through our group Voices Against Hunger. Voices members contact officials, write letters, attend public meetings and help push forward our anti-hunger agenda. Lobbying We lobby local, state and federal officials on anti-hunger legislation and public policies. |
