The Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame has inducted Isabelle Kelley, principal author of the Food Stamp Act of 1964, in recognition of her work that contributed to social change. Kelley began her career at the United States Department of Agriculture in 1940, and focused on establishing free and reduced-price school lunches. She was one of four presidential appointees in 1961 to a task force which was charged with creating a food stamp program, and became the SNAP/Food Stamp Program’s first national director.
