Sec. Timberlake, Dust Off Wisconsin's Disaster Food Stamp Plan!

The State should be helping July flood victims get the help they need—but right now they are leaving disaster food stamp benefits on the shelf! Call Secretary Timberlake, Department of Health Services, at 608-266-9622 and urge the State to submit its D-SNAP (Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) plan now!

Following the July flood in Milwaukee, the Department of Health Services created a plan that would have used community based locations to get disaster benefits out to everyone who needed help. Disaster food stamp benefits are one-time benefits lasting for the period of the disaster. Applicants do not need to be participating in the FoodShare program to qualify for disaster benefits.  Disaster FoodShare would provide flood victims with resources to replace food lost due to water damage or power outages.

At present, 23,000 individuals have applied for FEMA assistance and 77% were approved to get help. The Department of Health Services reported that 65,000 individuals were flood victims. There are many more people who can be helped—but only if the State submits its plan. The longer the State waits to take action, the less likely the Federal Government is to approve the plan.
