Letter Carrier Food Drive totals up 15% over last year
Milwaukee (May 24, 2010) — Hunger Task Force announced totals today for their largest one-day food drive of the year, the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger food drive. This year over 900,000 pounds of food were collected by Milwaukee’s local union of Letter Carriers, Pioneer Branch 2. This number is up from last year and the total amount collected in the state of Wisconsin was 3,069,094 pounds!
Steve Erceg, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers – Pioneer Branch 2 stated, “I couldn’t be more proud of the letter carriers, they always come through for the community. Maybe we should add ‘a billion pounds of food’ to the motto, ‘neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow…’”
According to Sherrie Tussler, Executive Director of Hunger Task Force, “We want to thank postal customers all over Milwaukee for helping feed a hungry neighbor. Milwaukee consistently rallies to our cause which is why Hunger Task Force can assure free food for the hungry.”
“This year the United Way stepped up, joining Johnson Controls and Piggly Wiggly to assure that the drive was successful statewide. These community institutions are great corporate citizens,” Tussler added.
The National Association of Letter Carriers food drive is a one-day event held annually the second Saturday of May.
