Vision & Standards
Serving the hungry with dignity and equality

Our Vision
Through a network of emergency and supplemental food programs, Hunger Task Force seeks to end hunger on a daily basis and over the long term. We envision a Milwaukee County where people experiencing a crisis can get food in their neighborhood on the day that they need it and where people with persistent food needs are referred to supplemental nutrition programs so that they can stop visiting charities. We believe that the supply of food given should represent breakfast, lunch and dinner for all members of the household. We also believe that people in need should receive foods that are respectful of their circumstances, culture, diet and religion.

Our Standards
Hunger Task Force is strategic in its efforts to end hunger in our community. Our strategy places an emphasis on providing the best quality service to the hungry.

We supply qualified organizations with the foods necessary to assist people seeking help, but we also require that these organizations meet certain standards for operating. Hunger Task Force maintains a comprehensive set of “best practice” guidelines -- and requires adherence to these Standards of Excellence in program operations -- to ensure that emergency food pantries, meal programs and shelters are storing and handling food safely, providing clean facilities, serving people with dignity and equality and achieving compliance with program integrity and accountability.

Evaluating Our Work
In order to assess our own work, we survey pantry users and meal program guests to ensure that they are receiving good customer service, safe and culturally relevant food in adequate supply for the emergency needs of their household and referrals and support in applying to supplemental food programs. We regularly assess the geography of the food providers network to ensure that food is available in the neighborhoods where it is needed. We limit the number of programs we support in order to build capacity at existing programs and to reduce duplication of effort. By thinking strategically about the work we do, we identify and engage resources to achieve our vision of long-term community food security.
