Food for Today...a hunger simulation for your group
What is a hunger simulation? Hunger Task Force offers a popular 90-minute interactive workshop called Food for Today. In this simulation, participants take on roles of individuals and families struggling to make ends meet. This is a great activity to raise awareness about the causes of hunger, the resources available to those in need, and to create empathy for individuals caught in poverty's trap. It's a fun and educational way for groups looking to increase their understanding of hunger issues. What happens during Food for Today? During Food for Today, participants take on roles of Wisconsin residents in a fictional community. Most participants will work to obtain food, playing diverse roles of families, seniors, single mothers, or other community members. A smaller group of participants will manage stations representing local grocery stores, non-profit groups, or government offices. For the first 45 minutes, participants rotate among the stations to provide food for themselves and their families over the course of three simulated days, the goal being to provide one's family with sufficient, healthy food for each of the three days. For the second 45 minutes, participants will debrief the activity and learn about community and government resources that do exist to help hungry families and individuals. Our hope is that participants learn more about the root causes of hunger and how to take a concrete action steps towards ending it. Who can participate in Food for Today? Food for Today is suitable for use in community organizations, places of worship, colleges, workplaces, and social service settings. We offer the simulation to youth groups on occassion, if appropriate. Accommodations Food for Today requires a minimum of 20 participants and a maximum of 50. Please plan to hold the activity in a room with sufficient space to move around. The activity also requires eight tables and enough chairs for all participants. How can I sign up my group? Please contact our Community Educator at (414) 238-6470 or by email. In your message, please indicate your preferred date(s), time, location and the potential number of participants. |
