What is hunger?How many times a week do you say to yourself, "I'm hungry?" Many of us have the luxury of opening a full fridge or buying a quick bite from a drive-through restaurant. We have enough food at our disposal to live healthy, active lives. Some are not so lucky. For many people in Wisconsin, there is no certainty that they will have access to nutritious food for themselves or their family. Food Insecurity "Food insecurity" is a technical term used to describe families or individuals who do not have access to a regular, constant food supply. There are multiple causes of food insecurity: poverty, low wages, limited transportation and geographic isolation. Most often, many families simply don't have enough money left after paying rent, utilities and health care to purchase enough food. In fact, eleven percent of Wisconsin households are food insecure. Hunger happens when families reduce the amount of food they eat because they cannot afford the food they need. Hunger can be painful, disorienting and, over time, can result in malnutrition.
