Partner of the Month: Richards Elementary School | February 2024

Feb 16, 2024

Hunger Task Force isn’t just Milwaukee Free & Local food bank – we’re a community. We believe in the power of collaboration, and that’s why we’re thrilled to recognize our amazing supporters through “Partner of the Month,” a platform to celebrate the incredible local organizations, businesses and companies who join us in the fight against hunger. They donate food, volunteer their time, raise awareness and provide financial support – strengthening our work in preventing hunger and malnutrition by providing food to people in need today and by promoting social policies to achieve a hunger-free community tomorrow.

Richards Elementary School

Hunger Task Force applauds Richards Elementary School for their commitment to ending hunger and cultivating a generation of compassionate changemakers within their vibrant school community. Richards School is home to over 600 students in grades 4K through fifth grade, and we proudly recognize them as our February Partner of the Month.

Through the generous efforts of students, teachers, parents and supporters, the Richards Elementary community has collected food and monetary donations supporting local organizations for over 27 years. Since 2022, Richards Elementary has raised a cumulative 2,300 pounds of healthy food and $12,200 in donations for Hunger Task Force. By seamlessly integrating service learning into their curriculum, they empower students to grasp the realities of hunger and actively seek solutions. Richards isn’t just collecting food; they’re fostering a generation of changemakers.

“Every year the third-grade class at Richards School is proud to partner with the Hunger Task Force during our Changing the World literacy unit,” shares Elizabeth Haase, a teacher at Richards School. “In this unit, students brainstorm ways they can make a difference in our community and incorporate them into persuasive essays. By partnering with the Hunger Task Force, students receive hands-on experience in making Milwaukee a better place.”

With every can of soup or box of cereal collected, these young heroes are filling bellies and spreading kindness, proving that compassion and action know no age limit. Let’s celebrate these amazing kids and encourage others to join them in making a difference in our community. Thank you Richards Elementary!

Stay tuned! Every month, we’ll introduce you to a new community hero, highlighting their unique contributions and the meaningful impact they have on our shared mission to feed our neighbors in need.
