Volunteer of the Month: Quincy Johnson

Jul 2, 2025

Each month Hunger Task Force is honored to recognize an individual or organization that goes above and beyond in their service to the organization.

Hunger Task Force relies on the help of more than 16,000 generous volunteers every year. From food sorting and building healthy food boxes for seniors to helping individuals shop the Mobile Market and harvesting at The Farm, volunteers help Hunger Task Force feed people today and support our work in ending future hunger.

Quincy Johnson has been a longtime volunteer across a variety of Hunger Task Force programs. Quincy first got involved in 2007 with a desire to help people access the food they need. For nearly two decades, he’s remained a reliable and passionate volunteer, especially at Stockbox distributions and with the Senior Farmers Market Voucher program. A minister and longtime community servant, Quincy brings both heart and dedication to every volunteer opportunity, always with a focus on uplifting others. We’re proud to recognize Quincy as our Volunteer of the Month!

When did you start volunteering with Hunger Task Force, and what made you want to get involved?

Quincy: I first got involved with Hunger Task Force in 2007 because I wanted to help people get the food they need. In 2010, I started assisting with Stockbox distributions at Layton Gardens, working closely with Rick Lewandowski, Network Services Director, and got involved with other programs like the Senior Farmers’ Market Voucher program. I’ve always enjoyed helping, and I truly love the people I work with. It keeps me coming back.

What volunteer activities do you help with?

Quincy: I help with several programs, including distributing Senior Farmers’ Market Vouchers and Stockboxes, and assisting with administrative tasks like stuffing envelopes. I like staying active and pitching in wherever I’m needed.

What’s your favorite part about volunteering?

Quincy: The people, hands down. Helping people is what I enjoy most. As a minister, I’m always looking for ways to serve the community, and with my medical background, I understand how important food is to people’s health. I’ve been volunteering in the community since I was young, whether it was with the Salvation Army, Job Corps or back-to-school programs. This kind of service has always been part of who I am.

Why do you continue to pick Hunger Task Force?

Quincy: Because of the hard work they do for people who are struggling. It inspires me to be a part of that. Since I started volunteering, I’ve seen how kind and helpful the staff are with volunteers and everyone who walks through the door. They treat people with patience, dignity and respect, no matter what they’re going through. That touches my heart. Programs like FoodShare and the farmers’ market vouchers make such a difference, and I’m proud to be part of a team that cares so deeply.

What’s been your most memorable experience volunteering?

Quincy: One of my favorite experiences is helping distribute the Senior Farmers’ Market Vouchers each year. I get to interact directly with seniors and see how happy they are when they receive the vouchers. Watching someone walk away with a smile, knowing they’ll be able to get fresh, healthy food is what it’s all about.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Hunger Task Force?

Quincy: I’d tell them to go for it! Volunteering is a great way to get involved and make a real difference. People in our community need support, and Hunger Task Force is a great place to start helping. You’ll meet good people, learn about the programs, and feel like you’re doing something meaningful.
