Volunteer of the Month: Mark Roesler
Each month Hunger Task Force is honored to recognize an individual or organization that goes above and beyond in their service to the organization.
Since first visiting the Hunger Task Force Farm in May 2023, Mark Roesler has become a familiar and dedicated volunteer out in the fields, orchards and gardens. Drawn to the hands-on nature of the work and the opportunity to make a direct impact, Mark quickly immersed himself in a wide range of volunteer activities including planting, harvesting, supporting the School Garden and helping prepare fresh produce for distribution.
Hunger Task Force is proud to honor Mark as our Volunteer of the Month and is grateful for his commitment to our Free & Local mission!
When did you start volunteering with Hunger Task Force and what made you want to get involved?
Mark: When I decided to look for a volunteer opportunity, Hunger Task Force was high on my list. I was especially interested in volunteering at the Hunger Task Force Farm, and the website made it easy to explore opportunities and sign up. My first visit was in May 2023, and I’ve been coming back regularly ever since.
What volunteer activities do you help with?
Mark: One of the things I enjoy most is the variety of work at The Farm. I’ve helped plant and harvest crops, start seedlings, wash and sort produce, and work in the orchards and fish hatchery. I’ve also spent time helping maintain the School Garden. There’s always something new to learn and different ways to contribute.
What’s your favorite part about volunteering?
Mark: The people! I really enjoy working alongside a group of like-minded individuals who share a common goal of reducing hunger in our community. The staff at The Farm are friendly, helpful and enthusiastic, and the same goes for the volunteers. When everyone comes together, you can see how much gets accomplished.
Why do you continue to pick Hunger Task Force?
Mark: The welcoming environment at The Farm makes it easy to keep coming back. There are always new experiences depending on the season, and I can clearly see the impact of the work. Whether it’s pallets of fresh produce heading out for distribution or kids getting excited while harvesting in the School Garden, it’s rewarding to know our efforts are making a difference.
What’s been your most memorable experience volunteering?
Mark: It’s hard to pick just one, but one of my favorite experiences is making pickles for the kids who visit the School Garden. There’s a real sense of accomplishment when a small team can prepare several hundred jars in just a few hours, knowing they’ll be enjoyed by the students.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Hunger Task Force?
Mark: I’d tell them to come on down to The Farm. With so many different activities to choose from, there’s something for everyone. It’s a great way to get involved, work alongside others, and make a real impact for people experiencing food insecurity in our community.
