Community Nutrition Education

Hunger Task Force operates a robust nutrition education program that teaches students, parents and the public about healthy eating, culturally responsive foods, cooking, gardening, shopping on a budget, physical wellness and much more. We also work to create policies, systems and environmental changes throughout our community that promote healthy lifestyles. We don’t just feed our community – we also advocate for and educate our students, seniors and families about making healthy choices!

Throughout the year, the Hunger Task Force Child Nutrition Educator travels to schools in Milwaukee County to teach nutrition education to children and teachers. Students also participate in regular field trips to the onsite McCarty Education Kitchen at the Hunger Task Force Headquarters and to the Hunger Task Force Farm, where they gain hands-on experience working in the school garden and demonstration kitchens.

Our Hunger Task Force Community Nutrition Manager and Community Nutrition Educator also work within the community to educate students, seniors and families about choosing healthy foods, cooking simple recipes and doing it all while saving money. For more information about recipes and learning opportunities or to plan a visit to The Farm or set up a cooking class, contact us at [email protected].

Our Nutrition Education Kitchens

McCarty Education Kitchen

The McCarty Education Kitchen at Hunger Task Force’s West Milwaukee headquarters was established in 2022 by the Brian A. McCarty Family Fund. Brian McCarty and his family wanted to invest in a program space that brought people from all walks of life together around healthy eating, cooking and nutrition. The McCarty Education Kitchen hosts youth nutrition education programming, cooking demonstrations, community events and more year-round.

Farm Nutrition Education Kitchen

The Hunger Task Force Farm features a Nutrition Education Kitchen where local students engage in hands-on learning to prepare healthy meals using fresh, often farm-grown ingredients. This vital resource empowers kids to make informed food choices and develop practical cooking skills for nutritious and budget-friendly eating, strategically incorporating culturally relevant recipes and fresh, budget-friendly ingredients.

Hunger Task Force MyPlate

The Hunger Task Force MyPlate is a healthy model that showcases the five main food groups as presented on a plate – fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. MyPlate encourages people to eat healthy foods by choosing the right types and amounts of foods to eat. This assures that vulnerable children, families and seniors who rely on food from the pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters receive nutritious foods.
