50 Faces. 50 Stories. 50 Years of Fighting Hunger.

Hunger Task Force is proud to be Milwaukee’s only Free & Local food bank and Wisconsin’s anti-hunger leader. In celebration of our 50th Anniversary, Hunger Task Force is highlighting “50 Faces of Ending Hunger,” honoring the anti-hunger heroes who champion Free & Local and support our mission to end hunger.

Brian McCarty isn’t waiting on the world to change. Instead, he is investing his knowledge and resources into the community and encouraging others to do the same. He donated $500,000 to create the McCarty Education Kitchen – a highlight of the new Hunger Task Force headquarters. The McCarty Education Kitchen offers a unique opportunity for Hunger Task Force to share the joys of cooking healthy meals with the community and McCarty’s gift reflects his deep commitment to community and combines two of his philanthropic passions – education and food security.

As an orthopedic surgeon in sports medicine, he has witnessed a dramatic shift in the understanding of the ways nutrition affects athletic performance.

“These same concepts apply to everyday life at school, at work and at home,” said McCarty. “Too many people go hungry. Even among those who find enough food, the quality is often poor and results in malnutrition which negatively impacts performance, energy levels, mood and overall health.”

At age 13 he volunteered at St. Benedict the Moor Parish to help serve a community meal. At the end of the service, McCarty shared a meal with a man who had lost his job, his home and his family – everything in a matter of months. This hardworking man’s life was upended seemingly overnight. Now homeless, he was experiencing his first community meal. McCarty realized then that if he ever had an opportunity to give back – he would.

“I don’t consider this charity, because I am investing in our community and I encourage others to do the same, adds McCarty. “The more we work together and for one another – the stronger we shall be. Too much potential is left on the sidelines and is held back by hunger, poor nutrition, and the lack of quality education. I implore all of us to consider what we can do to be the change we want to see.”
