Child Nutrition Education at Hunger Task Force Enhances Kids’ Health and Wellness
Happy Healthy Kids Day! Hunger Task Force recognizes the importance nutrition education has on our youth. When we think about improving children’s health, access to food is only part of the equation. Sustainable wellness comes from knowledge, confidence and hands-on experience.
Hunger Task Force’s nutrition education programming empowers Milwaukee-area children to opt for healthy foods that they know how to prepare. This not only ensures children eat well, but they’re also positioned to make healthy choices for years to come to improve their long-term health outcomes.
National data from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans shows that more than 80% of Americans have dietary patterns that are low in dairy, fruits and vegetables and the vast majority of children exceed recommended limits for sodium, added sugars and saturated fats.
These unhealthy eating patterns don’t just affect kids while they are young; they shape long-term health outcomes. Without nutrition education, persistent poor childhood nutrition increases the risk of developing chronic diseases later in
Hunger Task Force’s Child Nutrition Education program takes children on a healthy eating journey from the classroom to the School Garden at the Hunger Task Force Farm and into the kitchen. Through this Garden to Plate model, students learn about nutrition in a way that is interactive, engaging and memorable. To leave a lasting impression, students:
- Grow fruits and vegetables in a garden
- Cook nutritious, budget-friendly and culturally familiar recipes
- Taste and explore new foods using all their senses
- Learn how different food groups fuel their bodies
- Build a healthy plate
This hands-on approach helps transform abstract concepts into real-life skills. When children plant seeds, harvest produce and prepare meals themselves, healthy eating becomes something tangible and exciting. As a result of this dynamic programming, students gain appreciation for the environment and where food comes from, increase their confidence in the kitchen, increase their curiosity about new foods and independence in making healthy eating choices.
Hunger Task Force’s child nutrition education program aims to reach students and families who face the greatest barriers to healthy food access. By partnering with three local school districts, and working with children eligible for participation in nutrition programs, Hunger Task Force ensures that education reaches those who can benefit most.
Keeping youth healthy is about more than food; it’s about opportunity. By teaching kids how to grow, prepare and enjoy healthy meals, we are helping them build a foundation for lifelong wellness and empowering them to take control of their health, make informed choices and carry those habits into their futures.
When children understand the power of food, they eat better and live better. Support child nutrition by volunteering at Hunger Task Force, advocating for strong child nutrition policies or donating to purchase necessary ingredients and cookware for nutrition classes.
